Assata Gilmore
Presidential Candidate
Assata Gilmore is a rising Senior with a major in Finance and minor in French here at Purdue. She is the oldest of three and originally from Hyde Park in Chicago, Illinois.
She has significantly enjoyed her time here on campus! Through Krannert, she has been able to participate in several incredible programs for professional development and academic enhancement. Her favorite class thus far has been Business Law with Cara Putman, which increased her interest to attend law school to become a corporate attorney. Her French minor allows her to incorporate her international background into her everyday studies. Through her travels she has gained a deeper sense of cultural diversity and contributes her ability to be a confident leader with the skill to work productively with other leaders to the experiences that come along with interacting with a diverse range of cultures, languages, and ways of life.
Outside of academics, Assata is quite involved on campus. From professional development, to community outreach, university fundraising, and arts and music engagement, she can be found in nearly every sphere of campus life. She is a student assistant at the Parrish Library, a recent addition to the Purdue Foundation Student Board (PFSB), and a proud member of the Business Opportunity Program (BOP), class of 2017. In her free time, you will often find her playing the guitar, watching Schitt’s Creek, baking her special cream cheese cookies, or singing with the Black Voices of Inspiration (BVOI) choir at the Black Cultural Center (BCC).
As Vice President of Purdue Student Government, Assata focuses heavily on providing transparency into the PSG process, and ensuring that the needs of traditionally underserved populations on campus are brought to the fore of campus-consciousness. She recently spearheaded efforts for a campus-wide Mental Health Awareness Week, and continues to advocate for the increase of mental health resources here at Purdue.
Throughout next year, Assata hopes to increase the presence of PSG on campus in order to ensure that every student's voice is heard and needs are met in order to thrive during their Boilermaker experience.
Hannah Walter
Vice Presidential Candidate
Hannah is a junior studying Health & Human Science with minors in biology and Spanish. She is also a member of the Honors College. Hannah has been a part of Purdue Student Government (PSG) since 2018, serving two terms as a senator. She has worked to amend Purdue class absence policies to better accommodate students in times of grief as well as allow time away from school for jury duty and family leave, aided in the organization of the 2020 Mental Health Awareness Week, organized internal PSG leadership development opportunities, and helped improve recycling availability in the Honors College.
In 2016 Hannah served as a Girls Nation Senator for the American Legion Auxiliary’s. This experience sparked her love of government, and she has returned to the Hoosier Girls State Program every summer since to teach young women about their rights and responsibilities as well as the functions of government. Hannah is also involved on campus and in the Lafayette community as an Honors College Mentor, in Cru campus ministries, a volunteer in children’s ministries at City of God Church, a 2019 500 Festival Princess, and a past member of Purdue Foundation Student Board and Timmy Global Health. In her free time, Hannah enjoys playing guitar and ukulele, running and tennis, and spending time with friends and family. Hannah is excited to form continued relationships with students and faculty through Purdue Student Government over this next year.
