Our Open Letter

Dear Purdue Community,

We hope this message finds you safe, healthy, and in good spirits despite our current global circumstances.

Our names are Assata Gilmore and Hannah Walter and we are running for President and Vice President of Purdue Student Government (PSG). It is our top priority to ensure that our University takes the necessary steps to support all students during these uncertain and chaotic times. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unforeseen changes within our campus that have affected us all in one way or another. In these extraordinary moments, there is no better time to unite as student leaders to advocate for those in need.

This event has caused a great deal of reflection on the measures in place that inhibit a comprehensive and immediate response for those in need. This reflection and reform will continue well after the pandemic, as we intend to do everything in our power to make sure Purdue Student Government is well equipped to help our students in the case that future leaders are met with similar unfortunate circumstances. This includes creating a Campus Crisis Fund to allow Purdue Student Government to respond effectively and rapidly to crises faced by the student body. In the meantime, we hope that you are staying aware and up-to-date on University policy as things continue to change.

The most current information in regards to Purdue can be found here, and several resources for students in need are listed here on our website. Social isolation can be particularly hard for those struggling with their mental health. We will continue to report the most accurate information on resources via our social media platforms. We urge everyone to contact us with any questions, comments, or concerns you may have at this time. Although we will be unable to meet and collaborate with you in person, we are still available and more than willing to set up meetings and times for discussion via phone, email, Skype, etc. Contact us at gilmorea@purdue.edu, walte125@purdue.edu, or via our website https://www.gilmorewalter2020.com/

As we finish the rest of the semester in a less than ideal environment remember that the core foundations of a Boilermaker are to be resilient, strong in the face of adversity, achieve what has never been done before, and dare to be BOLD.

We hope you will join us as we go against the odds and Dare to be BOLD.

Ever grateful,

Assata Gilmore

Hannah Walter
